The Signature Fragrances of CEOs

If you’ve ever walked past a woman only to inhale a scent so intoxicating that you almost swooned, then you know perfume is an olfactory force to be reckoned with. Equally unforgettable, one whiff of a OUAI scent is a friendly forecast of the bomb hair day you're about to experience. In celebration of our upcoming OUAI fragrances announcement (who's excited?!), we interviewed female CEO’s, CIO’s and co-founders about the perfumes behind the powerhouses. Keep scrolling as boss babes reveal their signature fragrances, and their go-to perfumes for power meetings and date nights.

Sarah Potempa, Inventor of The Beachwaver Co.

What’s the first perfume you ever wore?
My grandmother used to wear Evening in Paris by Bourjois. Years ago, she gave me a bottle and it evokes so many memories of what an amazing role model she was for me and my sisters. Even the name brings back memories for me from when I studied abroad and visited Paris for the first time. It has some of my favorite elegant notes like cedar, amber and vanilla, which is an uplifting scent.

Name the signature fragrance that you wear daily. How long has it been your signature?
When I was starting out as a stylist, I worked at Privé Salon in New York and we sold Kai, it was the first time I had used a fragrance that was made with essential oils. We sell it now at our local shop B. Bungalow, which I own with my two sisters and mom in Libertyville, Illinois.

Describe the fragrance in 3 words.
Natural, fresh and relaxing

How does wearing it make you feel?

It helps me feel me calm and collected. It creates an instant feeling of balance before starting my day.

Do you wear a different fragrance for power meetings?
I like to change it up by using different essential oils. I enjoy lemongrass and lavender, which I get at our local health food store Murphy's in Libertyville.

Are there any perfumes that evoke good memories for you?
The best memories I have from fragrance are ones from my mom, she used to wear Estée Lauder Youth-Dew and Beautiful. When I smell those scents, it instantly reminds me of my childhood.

Dr. Lamees Hamdan, Founder of Shiffa Beauty

What’s the first perfume you ever wore?
Pure Oud, which is a thick brown viscous oil resin, like pure perfume, and I was probably only a few months old! In our culture, pure Oud is an acceptable perfume for children, women, and men alike. I still use it on my own children (boy and girls) for special occasions. It's too expensive to use everyday.

Name the signature fragrance that you wear daily. How long has it been your signature?
Aya by Shiffa. I created it myself using a high concentration of Opurs, and seven different types of musk. It is such a delicate, light musk scent, and I always get compliments from men and women when I wear it.

Describe the fragrance in 3 words.
Light, heavenly, musky

How does wearing it make you feel?
Happy and seductive

Do you wear a different fragrance for power meetings?
For power meetings, I like using Bijan Women's Fragrance. I remember it when it first launched in the early 80’s, and I rediscovered it a year ago in LA at the famous yellow Bijan store on Rodeo Drive. I like to use fragrances that aren’t too seductive or flowery for power meetings.

Do you wear a different fragrance on date nights?
Oh yes! :) It is either a perfume by Shiseido that you can only get in Japan, the name is only written in Japanese. Or Kore, which is another perfume I developed, that smells like rose lipstick on balmy skin. It's very earthy and sensual.

Are there any perfumes that invoke good memories for you?
Perfumes remind me of people, so it is worthwhile having a signature scent because people will always remember you by them! For instance, Jen Atkin has a signature scent, which is very Gardenia and Jasmine based. She wears a few different fragrances but they all have this common gardenia theme. And old spice reminds me of my grandfather.

Tribu by Benetton and Fuzzy Peach by The Body Shop, but not at the same time!

Roses smoking tobacco.

How does wearing it make you feel?

Like myself, which is what a daily fragrance should do, in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong: I’m all for something that transports you, but I prefer that for specific occasions, like a vacation.

Do you wear a different fragrance on date nights?

When I was single, I wore Le Labo’s Santal 33 for dates, because I liked that it was a little ambiguous and more masculine. Men seem to really love it; as a matter of fact, two of my male friends bought it after smelling it on me.

Are there any perfumes that evoke good memories for you?

I love that fragrance is just so transporting. Someone can walk by you wearing a scent you associate with a friend or a period of time in your life, or even an ex, and suddenly you’re thrown back in time. It’s crazy powerful. I always have a soft spot for Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, because it was one of the first scents I ever wore, and I still smell it on people all the time. It reminds me of living in New York in my early 20s, and all the craziness that went along with that time in my life.
