This Festival Hair Trend is About to Blow Up

Flower crowns, glitter, earrings—you name it, every hair and non-hair accessory and color of the rainbow has found its way on the manes spotted at the musical wonderland that is Coachella. Every year is another opportunity to revamp last year’s look and avoid festival hair clichés. If it were up to us, your festival hairstyle would fall nothing short of cool girl, and allow you to whip your strands to the sick sounds of the speakers without greasy, sweaty consequences. Enter: the rope braid ponytail, a festival hair trend that’s about to blow up. In three words, the rope braid ponytail is our favorite Coachella hairstyle because it’s: easy, fresh, stunning.

Let’s start with the easy part. The rope braid ponytail marries two sections of your regular ponytail to form a twisted rope style, as the name implies. Watch our simple tutorial above to see exactly how it’s done. Short on time? Rope braid ponytail Cliff Notes: Apply OUAI Memory Mist Heat Protectant before straightening, tie into a ponytail then divide the ponytail into two sections. Smooth the ponytail with OUAI Hair Oil then twist each section before combining into a rope. Leave out an inch at the end then secure with a snag-free hair tie. Tame flyways with a dab of OUAI Matte Pomade (first emulsified between fingers then applied). That’s all she wrote. And if you don't even have time for that, simply twisting into a rope braid then spraying OUAI Hair & Body Shine Mist all over for glass-like shine would suffice.

Don’t get it twisted though—while the rope braid ponytail looks snatched and ready for the sun’s glowy embrace when it’s sleek, it can be worn in any texture and on any hair type be it messy, curly, and fine. For proof of the rope braid ponytail’s Coachella day two hair qualifications, look no further than the styles you see here. For an undone finish, prep with OUAI Wave Spray then once done, gently pull apart your rope braid ponytail and finish with OUAI Texturizing Hair Spray. If sleek is your way of life, pack mini OUAI Hair Oil to keep your rope braid pony polished at all times of the day. Girls who frizz up fast, keep a box of OUAI Anti-Frizz Hair Sheets in your micro-backpack. Fine or flat hair types can take body up a notch with OUAI Volumizing Hair Spray. Curly queens whose coils need recuperating, pack OUAI Rose Hair & Body Oil.

Whereas a regular ponytail lacks originality and a bubble ponytail requires too many steps, the rope braid ponytail boasts both an It girl factor and a level of effortlessness required to get through all of Coachella weekend without washing your hair. Which can only mean one amazing thing: more time to play. Plus, knowing your ponytail's in it for the long haul, you can pay full attention to your favorite crooners without having to wonder if your flowers fell out or your temporary color spray stained your all-white ensemble. Sounds like a win-win-win to us.
