OUAI Crush Haley Olsen On the Perks of Being a Makeup Artist
We first met Haley Olsen at a OUAI Sephora event, and we loved her so much, we put her in our Live Life Your OUAI Campaign. With her long, glossy waves, the blue-eyed babe from Washington killed her cameos, just like she’s killing the beauty game. As a professional makeup artist based in Silverlake, Los Angeles, Haley’s happiness comes from making people feel beautiful, and you know we're all about feeling fierce in our own skin. Ahead, our copper-haired crush gives advice to aspiring makeup artists, shares a must-read educational beauty book, and her favorite makeup products.
You have a friend in town for 48 hours— where do you tell them to eat, shop and visit?
The best food I've had in LA is at Catch, Tao or the farmers market at The Grove (which is amazing for shopping!). Also, Santa Monica and Venice Beach are my favorite places for days off.
Describe your everyday beauty routine.
I change up my makeup and hair a lot depending on my mood of the day. Most days I wear eyeshadow, mascara, eyebrows, tinted moisturizer, blush, bronzer and a pop of lipstick. Nude is my favorite color family of lipstick, but red and deep berries can change your whole look to make it more bold. For my hair, I'm a beachy wave type of girl. I curl my hair using a curler and hair spray, then I comb it out and use OUAI Texturizing Hair Spray and Wave Spray for volume. I add a bit of the Rose Hair & Body Oil to the ends and any fly aways.
What’s your go-to night out look?
For a night out, I like my makeup to be darker so it appears nicer on camera. I'll use Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Long Wear Foundation for a full coverage and create a structured eye look using neutral eyeshadows and a cat eye liner with the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner. My favorite lipsticks to wear out right now are Kylie Cosmetics in Exposed, Heir and KKW in Kimmie. For my hair, I'll add more volume using the OUAI Dry Shampoo in my roots and Soft Mousse in the bottom half of my hair.
What’s a time-saving beauty hack every girl should know?
I do my eyebrows and apply lipstick in my car. Maybe not recommended, but easy things to do at stoplights haha.
Favorite OUAI product: Soft Mousse!
Best book you’ve read recently?
I always re-read Kevyn Aucion's Making Faces, it has so many inspiring looks and is very educational!
What does a fun Saturday night look like to you?
Fingers crossed I'm off work early! I love going out on a dinner date or going out on the town with my girls!
What do you love most about your job?
I love making others feel beautiful. Somebody can have an insecurity that you could fix. Whether it’s covering up a new mother’s dark circles or helping someone master filling in their eyebrows. Seeing them leave happier, makes me happy!
What advice would you give someone looking to break into makeup artistry?
Do it because you love it, not because it’s a trend. I started in makeup because I loved it at a very young age and it continues to make me happy. You can teach yourself everything on the internet these days, so just keep practicing in the mirror!
