The kit's out of the bag—our dynamic duo OUAI X Summer Fridays Kit is happening so your skin and strands can stay fly while you fly, courtesy of travel-size OUAI Treatment Masque and Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask. For double the dewy fun, we did what any skincare aficionado would do and talked all things skincare with Summer Fridays' founders Marianna Hewitt and Lauren Gores Ireland. Here, the girl bosses making mugs glow one mask at a time spill all the skincare tea including their skincare routines, regrets, and best skincare advice to younger girls.
You both have naturally gorgeous skin! At what age did you start taking care of it and what were your go-to products and routines?
M: I have always been a product junkie and have tested and tried so many products. When I was working as a TV host, I would get my makeup done every day at work and the heavy TV makeup caused breakouts that I never had before. That combined with pollution caused my skin to change in my early 20s. It was then that I really started investing in facials and using the right products for my skin type.
My go-to routine is simple in the morning—I cleanse, use a vitamin c serum, sunscreen, and Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask under makeup. In the evening, it’s a little more complicated. I use a micellar water to remove makeup, Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover to take off eye makeup, cleanse with iS Clinical Cleansing Complex, follow up with a few serums depending on what my skin needs that day, Shani Darden’s Resurface Retinol Reform, and then Jet Lag Mask as an overnight mask in place of my moisturizer.
L: I never skip a night without washing my face! My mom taught me that really young — and it always stuck with me, even on my sleepiest nights. I started taking care of my skin in my early teens when I struggled with breakouts. Once out of college, I had to wear heavy makeup for my first job as a morning newscaster, which caused my skin to act up again. I swear by a few cleansers— the Arcona Raspberry Clarifying Bar for when I'm having breakouts, the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser for something milder while still removing makeup, and the Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser for a clean and effective face wash. My morning routine consists of: cleanser, vitamin C serum, Jet Lag Mask as a moisturizer + SPF. I also love a hydrating facial mist (like Tatcha's!) to apply throughout the day. My evening routine consists of: cleanser, toner (I love Beauty Counter's), Jet Lag Mask as an overnight mask, and acne spot treatments on any trouble spots.
Did anyone inspire you to invest in your skin?
M: Not only does my Mom love products, but my Dad too. He’s used eye creams and retinols for as long as I can remember, and he's inspired me to use anti-aging products.
L: My mom still has the most amazing skin so she certainly inspires me to take care of mine! I think SPF is really key, particularly in California, because I spend so much time outside. I also have sisters, so inevitably we inspire each other to try new products! AND, of course, Marianna inspires me — she reminds me to get facials when I get too busy with #momlife 😉 That mom life exhaustion was also a huge inspiration behind creating Summer Fridays— our Jet Lag Mask is meant for tired skin that needs a quick solution.
Do you have any favorite cosmetic bag brands?
M: At home, I organize everything in clear shoe boxes from the Container Store. For travel, I have a kit from Amazon that I keep packed at all times with my doubles of products so I am never away without my must-haves.
L: I really love the Cuyana Zipper Pouches for home and travel, and I love Glossier's Pink Pouches to carry small cosmetics in my work bag every day.
What inspired the key ingredients in Summer Fridays’ Jet Lag Mask and what ultimately made you go with those ones specifically?
M: We wanted a product that was clean, but effective and we wanted immediate results. I’m typing this as I am on a flight, and usually when I land I go straight to work so we wanted a product that gave super fast results so we would look more hydrated without having to wait 6-8 weeks to see if a product worked.
L: I was pregnant while we were formulating our products, and I was in the process of completely changing my skincare routine. It became increasingly difficult to find products that were both clean and effective. It felt like I had to choose — and my skin was acting up from the hormones. Hence, why Marianna and I wanted to keep the ingredients list super clean while also giving people real results that didn't require tons of money or time! We set a strict "no list" from day one — and really stuck to it (no parabens, no sulfates, no synthetic dyes or fragrances, etc.) and also worked closely with our lab to source the cleanest, most effective ingredients (like chestnut extract).
What’s the best way for my skin to absorb the full benefits of Jet Lag Mask?
M+ L: The mask doesn't need to be rinsed off! So, I love using it as both a daily moisturizer for extra hydration and as an overnight mask to really receive the benefits while my body rests.
What’s the max amount of time I can leave on Jet Lag Mask?
M + L: You can wear Jet Lag Mask as an overnight mask for eight hours and wake up to glowing skin.
Overtime Mask smells pumpkin pie-ish—how would you describe the smell of Jet Lag Mask?
M + L: Jet Lag Mask has almost no scent but it does smell very refreshing and when you apply it, has a cooling feeling that wakes up the skin.
If you could give younger girls one piece of advice about taking care of their skin, what would it be?
M: Wear sunscreen and don’t pick at your pimples!
L: Wash your face every night! It makes a huge difference on your under eyes over time.
Are there any skincare tools or gadgets you think everyone should own?
M: I love this ice roller from Amazon, any of Nurse Jamie’s beauty tools, and a jade roller.
L: I love keeping my jade roller in the refrigerator and using it when I wake up. I think the cooling effect really de-puffs my sleepy skin.
Do you sleep on a special pillowcase?
M: Yes, I love Slip Silk Pillowcases and I also travel with their eye masks– they are my favorite.
L: I usually don't, to be honest, but M is inspiring me to start trying!
What’s one skin misconception or myth you were surprised to learn?
M: If you pick at your pimples and you don’t wear sunscreen, they turn into dark spots – I never realized this until I learned it and now I am an SPF advocate.
L: Even if you have oily skin, it's really important to hydrate. Hydration doesn't cause breakouts, something I used to fear.
