Getting Gala-Ready With YouMe Lin
Bi-coastal consultant and producer YouMe Lin, who divides her time between New York and LA, recently attended a Crazy Rich Asians Gala, and when it came time to choosing a hairstyle, she decided to honor her Chinese heritage in favor of a sleek lob with body. Ahead, YouMe takes us behind-the-scenes of getting gala-ready with a breakdown of steps and products for achieving the smooth style.
This was my first gala ever and although I was super nervous the night before, everything panned out great. Hosted by a group of passionate Asian community leaders, the Gala was located at a beautiful Mansion located in Glen Cove, New York. The place was huge with countless rooms and plenty of activities planned for guests. The hairstyle I went for, a smooth lob with body at the ends, was simple yet elegant. The OUAI Anti-Frizz Hair Sheets are super-handy when it came time to touching up my hair on the go.
I wanted to wear a hairstyle that would allow me to keep my natural straight Asian hair because I felt like the Gala was a celebration of my heritage and an opportunity for me to share my natural features. My parents are both Chinese from southern China and I was born in New York City. However, I moved around quite a bit when growing up and have had the opportunity to live in various places, including Shanghai, Florida, and Europe, and learn about their cultures. Thus, I decided on a long, sleek bob with volume which is an elevation to how I would normally wear my hair.
For the most part, my hair is towards the dry side so hair masks are my must-haves when it comes to my pre-styling hair routine. My hair is very fine, but I have a lot of hair. Because of that, I love going for a trim every few months to remove some of the weight. I typically ask for a straight cut with natural long layers at the salon.
I feel like once you have find your core treatment products, your routine becomes simple and hassle-free. I used the OUAI Treatment Masque after shampooing—I’m always amazed with how good of a job it does at restoring my hair within minutes. It leaves my hair with a nice and soft scent that’s very soothing. It’s always nice to give your hair and scalp some love to set a good base before any kind of styling.
To achieve the sleek bob for the gala, I began with OUAI Memory Mist Heat Protectant before reaching for a straightener. Next, I used a flat iron over a section of hair, starting from the roots and gently pulling the flat iron all the way down, subtly curling the ends inwards to give it that long bob shape.
When finished, I used the OUAI Volumizing Hair Spray to give my hair some added texture and body to make it look less flat. Finally, I sprayed the OUAI Hair & Body Shine Mist to give my hair a nice glow! I’m obsessed with multi-purpose products and the Hair & Body Shine Mist is pure magic. It works great for both my hair and body, making for one less item to carry.
