Get ready to screenshot as the founder of Trple Mag, Tima G, details the recipe to her wash-and-go updo for naturally curly and wavy hair types.
As a curly girl, I continuously look for variations of a lazy hair style because I am always on the go. And now that summer is in full effect in Los Angeles, (thank you, rain, for finally leaving), I prefer to not wear my mid-length hair down as often since it is simply too hot. I am here for the top knots and sleek pony tails, but among scrolling through my feed on YouTube, I recently saw @iluvsaraii’s Simple Makeup No Eyeshadow tutorial and it got me inspired to add bangs to my bun. This way I show more of my hair texture in an easy yet chic updo because who doesn’t like to look cute on a summer day?!
This look is effortless and only takes five minutes. That’s right, boo, five minutes! There is no major need for brushes or hot tools, although you can use a comb for parting your bangs if you would like. To create this look, you will simply need your beautiful hands, a hair-tie or two depending on your hair texture, your favorite leave-in conditioner, and water. That’s it.
Before you start, I recommend to do this when your hair is at least one day old. My curls usually look best on the second day after a good wash n go, so that’s when I start to experiment with it. Currently, my wash n go products include the OUAI’s Curl Shampoo and Smooth Conditioner, followed by Shea Moisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave In Conditioner, since this awesome combination gives me the ultimate texture that lasts for days.
My hair texture is 2c, a cute mixture between a curl and a wave, so the products I use for any styling need to be super lightweight. To refresh my curls for this summer hair updo, first I spray water on my hair and then apply the OUAI Leave In Conditioner throughout lightly. I focus applying the Leave In on the front part of my hair, since only the bangs will be exposed, contrary to the rest being in a bun.
After I refresh my curls, I make a middle part in the front of my head with my fingers and then I part two equivalent pieces of my bangs to leave out of the soon-to-be bun. It’s okay to use a comb if you want a more straight part; I just keep it easy and simple. Also, if you want to avoid tying your bangs into the bun, you can always use a small hair-tie to withhold them in the front.
Next, I pull my hair to the top of the crown in order to make the bun. I usually like my bun to be super high, but this style can be as high or as low as you prefer. When I find the right area to tie my bun at, I take my large hair-tie, double it up, and start tying my hair one time.
The second time, I try to not flatten my curls because I want the texture to be seen, even in the bun. I do this a third time and by then, my bun is secure and looks more on the messy/effortless side. We want all the vacation vibes to flourish through this hairstyle.
Last but not least, we cannot forget about the finishing touches. Once my bun is ready to live its best life, I add a moisturizing hair oil for shine and of course, for a yummy hair scent. I am obsessed with the OUAI Rose Body & Hair Oil. I spray about three pumps on the palm of my hands, rub it together, and then gently apply to my bags, bun, and hair pulled back. Now, not only do I feel cute, but I also shine and smell good with the Rose Body & Hair Oil.
Looking cute shouldn’t take forever. It should be easy and convenient. I hope this simple yet fun summer updo inspires you to try new things in your hair routine. Curly hair can be a hassle sometimes, but by using the right products and techniques, you can create your next go-to style.
